She loses interest in people quickly, but can concentrate on some project for hours on end. She has no patience with shy people, but she doesn't like loud people either - despite how excitable she can get. She adores every kind of music she can find to listen to. Over all, Dié is a sweet girl filled with contradictions. Her energy seems to simply bubble out of her and create a shiny/joyous aura. She's very protective of her brother and more likely to cheer someone up than bring them down. She comes across as maybe a little too naive or childishly optimistic for her own good, but inside is hidden a deep hole of sorrow carved out of her heart from her losses. She wants to feel useful, so she'll try to help as much as she can - often more than she should, ending up with her worn out from giving too much. She has learned some hard lessons in a short span of time and has decided that she never wants to feel as weak as she did ever again. ________________________________________ History She Knows: Dié was born to a Chinese mother and a Japanese father. Her family was fairly poor, but they were mostly happy. Her brother came along five years later, and the family's lives became that much harder. Her father nick named her Cho-chan, "Because you're my butterfly." Dié was jealous of the attention her brother got, but this mollified her. Time passed, and they grew up and started school. She excelled in her lessons and made a lot of friends. Everyday, it seemed, she was over at a friend's house. This kept up with different friends through the years. Her parents were killed by a drunk driver when she was seven; thankfully she and her brother were at school and unharmed. After the funeral, different relatives offered to take them in, but only one really understood their pain. She and Sheng Li moved in with their paternal grandfather. - The Real History:
She was born Máo Dié, younger sister to Máo Wu. There is an eleven year age difference between the siblings, and their mother was a Japanese Sacrifice bonded to their Chinese father. There were schemes throughout the Chinese Aristocracy to bring down the Máo family, and their stranglehold on the military and (mostly shadow) political power. When Dié was three, her mother had taken her out on a shopping and play excursion with her elder brother; the toddler vanished from the stroller underneath the noses of the family and security. She was smuggled into Japan where her kidnapper and the woman's partner kept her hidden from the Aristocrats of both countries until the search died down. It took longer than expected; in fact the "couple" had a son two years after the heist, and still they waited. The woman's family sent her messages keeping her informed of when the time would be ripe to send the ransom note; the man's family had no idea and referred to the woman as "that Chinese whore" through the years. Four years after the heist, the woman and her partner died; it could have easily been an accident or someone cleaning up their tracks. The children were lost to the family in China and pushed off onto the man's father by the Japanese family. The family in China decided to go through with the scheme any way, but they were ignored by the then-Head of the Máo family, who also closed the search for the girl. After hearing about this, Máo Wu declared that he'd find her when he become Heir or Head, no matter how long or what it took.
Slightly More Recent Events: As they grew up, they discovered that the family felt guilty over the rift; they weren't really wanted because their mother had been a "damn Chinese whore" in the family's eyes. Sympathy chaffed at her, so she started avoiding both her brother and grandfather. Eventually, he enrolled them in local schools. They attended the new classes, and while their grades were nearly impeccable, neither of them made many friends. The pressure was on to make up for their time off, and they pushed each other hard. It became a competition to see who was better, but all things end. Eventually her brother went back to the loving child he'd been, while she gradually became more withdrawn. There was an ache in her soul that refused to heal, and she hated for anyone to know about it and worry. She began to learn guitar to keep her grandfather out of her hair, but she never plays for anyone but those important to her. She's entered her first year of senior high school, and it looks like she's not going to go any further toward making friends. She maintains an emotional distance when she actually attends class. A word appeared circling her ankle at the start of a vacation trip she took to visit Sheng Li and her grandfather, who had to retire to the country for his health. There was a terrible fight, and she returned two days early. On her way back from Kyoto, she rode the train as normal, but there was a feeling, a sort of bubbling of energy and joy within her as she boarded, but she couldn't figure out why. She sat beside a foreigner and the feeling grew stronger. Finally, to release some of her building energy, Dié began to swing her legs, and the most peculiar thing happened. The girl began to talk to her about the word on her ankle. She showed Dié her own matching word - in the same place! Dié couldn't believe her eyes, and invited the girl to her favorite cafe to discuss these strange markings at length. Neither of them knew what was going on and made their way around the city talking. The girl, Dice, was invited to sleep over at the apartment since she had no where else to go. Dié couldn't miss attending cram school, but when she returned from her day, the apartment was empty. Dice had vanished. - Spoiler:
The young girl opened the door, wanting to smile at her partner and tell the white-haired girl about her day. There was that odd echo she’d gotten used to, the one that said the house was completely empty. She entered and waited nervously for Dice to pop out of the closet or something similar, but she was alone in the silence. She refused to panic, looking for a note instead. When the child didn’t find one, she began to search the apartment thoroughly, but there was no sign that the other girl had ever been there at all. She knew there had to be some sign that Dice was coming back. Sheng Li’s room was as void of life as it had been two nights ago. Her own bed was as messy as she’d left it when she went to school this morning. Had she imagined the whole day and night? What about that talk with the boy or the others who’d seen and reacted to Dice? The young girl tossed her school bag on her bed and changed into her pajamas – pink as always. She paced around the house, which was both agitating and calming. She didn’t dare to look at the clock, as time seemed to slow down; instead, she watched dusk creep across the sky.
School started back and Dié had to attend despite her despondance over losing someone who had felt like her first friend since her parents' deaths. She sank deeper into the apathy that marked her attempts to fight through sorrow. Then came the night that she got the call: Sheng Li and she were on their own, and she had a week to prepare. - Spoiler:
She eventually fell asleep and woke up for school again. She felt drained, cold, and alone; she didn't even notice the looks she got in class or in the halls. She didn't eat lunch, and took her time leaving the campus. What was the point? She'd be all alone again. It had just been a cruel dream, right? But no, the word -Name- on her ankle was the only proof that it had really happened; that for one day she hadn't been alone. That was probably the worst part of the whole thing: she now knew just how alone she really was. She went around in that state for several days. After a week, she had to go numb just to survive. She sat outside and watched the hateful sun creep lower on the horizon, but all that meant was another night without a soul around. The sun had already vanished when the phone rang.
”Dice!” She shouted excitedly as she pounced on the phone, slightly out of breath when she answered it. On the other end was not the person she wanted to hear. It was an aunt informing her of her grandfather’s death. The woman implied it was Dié’s fault somehow, and that she would now be in charge of taking care of her brother; no one wanted the two of them. The young girl was shocked to silence, which had the aunt muttering about ingrates before curtly giving her the date and time of the funeral. She stared blankly at the phone after the woman hung up. Her mind was a swirling mass of dark thoughts and confusion. She had no one but Sheng Li now? She was only 15, how could she even possibly be his legal guardian, or support them both and finish school? She hung up the phone very carefully before falling to her knees. A palm rested on the ground in front of either leg, and her head was bowed; her eyes were squeezed shut against the suddenly spinning room. ”Kitten. Come on, you shouldn’t sit on the floor like that.” The young girl’s head snapped up and searched eagerly for her companion. She chased after the white tips she saw go around the corner of the hallway. ”Ice! Wait!”
Once more, Dié searched the house for any sign of the other girl; she had heard and seen her! Her eyes watered up, and she sat dejectedly on the foot of her own bed. ”I belong...with...you...now,” she called out to the phantasm of the girl she had been unable to catch. ”Oh, please...give in to me...and stay...forever.” She listened to the silence for any answer, but there was none. She sat there until she couldn’t stand the lonesome quiet for another moment; she didn’t want to cry where she could be found, where everything reminded her of her loss.
Dié ran out of the apartment without a thought for safety – or anything for that matter. The door slammed closed behind her, and her bare feet slapped on the stairs as she dashed down them. She was out on the street and going at full speed, trying to outrace herself. "Don't leave me behind!" A child's broken voice echoed throughout the night. Dié ran faster away from the apartment, needing to be somewhere, anywhere else. Tears fell from the young girl's eyes, a rain on her cheeks and shoulders. She wanted to close her eyes, but she couldn't see anyway, so there was no point in it. "No more! No more!" Not a single person was within reach; in fact, she was sure she was completely alone. She tripped over a can or stone - she didn't look to see which. The girl just curled up on her side on the ground where she fell, devoid of the will to get back up, to try to do anything else. "No, no, no, no, no, no, no."
She lay like that for hours, lost in her grief, until she went numb and stood back up. The child focused on her discomfort enough to make it to a set of swings, to sit in one and rock back and forth mindlessly. She was barefoot, and her pink tank and shorts were as filthy as the rest of her; lying in the dirt crying does that to one. Something inside made her eyes, red from the tears, look down. The word that had been a bane and a blessing was disappearing before her eyes. That was all she had of her only friend; it couldn't go away like that! No, please; please, no! I have to - I need her! No, no, no, please don't take her from me! We have to be together! I have to protect Di- she lost her train of thought as her eyes blurred again at the thought of the white-haired girl. The child hung her head and let the tears fall with great heaving sobs - the painful kind, as if she couldn't get enough air. Her head was pounding, but she couldn't do anything. All Dié could do was sit there, rocking back and forth in the swing as she cried her heart out: all the pain, anger, loneliness, abandonment; everything poured into the night air. She was alone in the park in the gloom; a dangerous thing, but the child couldn't care less. Her world was falling apart, and the visible evidence was there for any to see: Synergy was fading away from her ankle, and there was nothing she could do about it. She was lost now, and she had no way to come back. Finally, she stopped thinking at all; there was no reason for the tears, but they kept falling.
While she had been rocking in the dark, it had swallowed the word completely; Synergy was no more a part of her. Now there was a void in her soul, and when she could think again - could feel again - she'd notice it. Right now, she was a forgotten shell, a broken doll in the shadows; sunset had come and gone long, long ago, and dawn would soon approach, and she'd have to go on with her life. She couldn't afford to mourn her grandfather or the loss of Dice and her Name; when morning came, Dié would have to go to school, take care of Sheng Li, and find a job to pay for everything. Babysitting wasn't going to cut it anymore; she was going to have to get a real job and work full time. It was the only option, even if she had to drop out of school to do it. She couldn't lose him too, and she'd take care of her brother until he didn't need her any more.
A breeze played with her short black hair, pushing her swing as well as the others, and her legs kicked automatically. The broken young girl looked at her now bare ankle with blue-gray eyes that didn't really see, not now, but they would later; her tears were dried on her translucent cheeks by the breeze, but more kept falling to replace them. Her child's voice was a harsh whisper from the force of her sobs, "No, please; please, no. No, no, no," she whispered repeatedly, voice and lips cracking, but she continued to deny the truth. Her mind was on the edge of a cliff, and the darkness at the base invited her to jump. It was a thundering ocean of black, midnight blue, burgundy, and deepest violet; it was revolting and alluring at the same time. Her toes dug in the dirt physically when her sanity prepared to leap off the ledge and dive into the madness that waited below. She wasn’t even aware that she was still denying her loss aloud; her entire focus was on the seeming indecision of her mind. To jump or not to jump, that was the most important question she’d ever asked herself. To toss herself over that brink would keep the pain from her forever, but to teeter on it for eternity would just about kill her. She would either save herself from the pain and leap or save herself from the darkness and run far from the edge. The world outside of her head didn’t matter; she had no one to pull her away, and the abyss beckoned. Oh, how it begged her to take that last step from the cliff; the abyss promised a soft landing and the peace that she needed.
That night was a turning point in her life, a switch. - Spoiler:
How long had she faced down the abyss, indecision tearing her apart? The cliff invited her to jump, to leave behind her pain. 'You are worthless without your Name and partner. No one wants you, even Dice has left.' One foot lifted to hover over the edge. 'Yes. No one needs you.' But Sheng Li did. The foot returned to the surface of the cliff. She couldn't leave him on his own - couldn't afford the plunge while he still needed her. The dark mass swelled up and reached hungrily for her as she stepped away from the edge. She ran out of its grasp and heard a howl of rage; the sound sent a shiver down her spine and pulled her back into reality.
Around her was a slowly lightening night. She realized it must have been early, very early, morning. She was alone still. It was something she'd have to get used to again - fast. The funeral was in less than a week, then she and Sheng Li would be on their own. Blue-grey eyes sought the stars, and she whispered her single word plea - or is it a prayer? - to them. "Please." As if that would work any better than her pleading over her Name. She couldn't count on anyone or anything, only herself. She'd have to avoid others like her and Di- that boy (Don't think of her). Slowly, stiffly, she stood, feeling the effects of the night and moving cautiously. She couldn't stay out here forever, after all.
The door to the apartment was cracked open, but luck was on her side: nothing had been stolen. It seemed no one had even noticed her headlong flight. Good, that meant less explaining. She was careful to lock it behind her as she went to go bathe and dress for the day. She'd have to do her best to look her age if she was going to succeed. The first order of the day was to talk to the apartment manager. At best she'd have until the funeral to move their stuff out.
Once she knew how much time she had, she could look around for a more affordable place and a full-time job, or two. She'd have to figure out a way to stay in school, if at all possible, since the better-paying jobs required a better than 'good' education. She never stopped to think that the family might take Sheng Li back in if she promised to not bother them for her care too - he was her responsibility now. After the funeral, she brought her brother to the tiny motel she'd managed to find as temporary housing for them. Outside of the motel on her way home from looking for work (yet again) she came across a Unit bent on causing trouble - with her as the only unfortunate victim to pass by. She got the crap kicked out of her in a spell battle, words coming to her lips but refusing to leave them (and when they came out, the words were powerless), and then to top it off they derided her and gave her a physical beating to match the battle one. She was saved by a stranger named Morrigan, and now she and Sheng Li reside at the Kobayashi Family's Estate while Dié recovers from her injuries, learns her new limits and how to deal with her disability, and learns how to protect them both. ________________________________________ These are optional fields.
